Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have rescued three students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, who were abducted by gunmen in Esan West Local Government Area of the state.

The students were kidnapped on Sunday during an attack in the Ujemen G.T. Extension area of Ekpoma, where a 300-level student, Peter Ekpen Adolor, was shot and killed after responding to cries for help outside a hostel.

Briefing journalists on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika, represented by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Eno Ikoedem, said tactical teams were immediately deployed for a joint rescue operation involving the Nigerian Army, Edo State Security Corps and local hunters.

The police said security operatives located the kidnappers’ hideout in Erah Forest on Tuesday morning and engaged the suspects in a gun battle, forcing them to abandon the victims and flee.

One suspected kidnapper was killed, while another was arrested with gunshot injuries. Three AK-47 rifles, magazines, 36 rounds of ammunition, mobile phones and other items were recovered during the operation.

The rescued students, identified as Praise Obagbalu, Favour Okoroje and Balogun Precious, were taken to hospital for medical attention.

The victims said they were moved between different forest locations and pressured to demand ransom from their families before security forces rescued them without any payment.
