French club Paris Saint-Germain compounded Manchester City’s difficult week with a 4-2 Champions League victory at the Etihad Stadium, handing the English champions a damaging home defeat on Wednesday.
PSG produced a dominant first-half display, scoring three times inside 35 minutes through Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha. Manchester City responded after the break, with Erling Haaland scoring twice, but the comeback fell short as the French champions maintained their perfect start to the Champions League campaign.
The defeat came in City’s first home match since an independent commission found the club guilty of more than 100 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations. City face potentially severe sanctions but are expected to challenge the ruling.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the club, City had beaten Liverpool 3-0 in the Premier League on Sunday. Against PSG, however, they struggled to contain the European champions during a devastating opening period.
Doue opened the scoring after a rapid PSG counter-attack, beating former teammate Gianluigi Donnarumma at his near post with an effort from outside the penalty area. Dembele doubled the advantage two minutes later, finishing a slick combination with Doue by heading home at the far post.
Achraf Hakimi then struck the woodwork before Vitinha fired PSG’s third goal from the edge of the area.
City coach Enzo Maresca made three substitutions at half-time as his side attempted to rescue the game. Antoine Semenyo and Enzo Fernandez missed opportunities before Haaland headed home from Iliman Ndiaye’s cross.

Any hopes of a dramatic turnaround were quickly checked when Maghnes Akliouche restored PSG’s three-goal advantage. Donnarumma got a hand to it, but the ball looped into the air before dropping back into the net.
City continued to push, with Nuno Mendes clearing off the line and Haaland hitting the crossbar before the Norwegian striker eventually scored his second goal of the night.
PSG goalkeeper Donnarumma later saved a Ferran Torres penalty, preventing City from reducing the deficit further.
PSG coach Luis Enrique acknowledged that City had caused his side significant problems despite the result.

“When you see a game at this level, two teams trying to play football, that was the kind of game we thought it would be,” Enrique said.
Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was also present at the Etihad for the first time since leaving the club in May, sitting close to chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano.
The result sends PSG to the top of the Champions League standings after two matches, while Manchester City sit three points behind in 17th place.
