Russia says its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 456 Ukrainian drones in overnight attacks targeting several regions, with local authorities reporting fatalities and damage to both civilian and industrial sites.
The Russian Defence Ministry said Monday that the large-scale drone attacks were directed at about 15 Russian regions, as well as Crimea, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
“Over the past night, air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 456 Ukrainian aerial drones,” the ministry said, describing one of the largest reported overnight drone attacks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The attacks came as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled, while Russia and Ukraine have intensified long-range strikes against targets far from the front lines. The escalation has increasingly affected civilian areas and contributed to rising casualties.
In Russia’s Tatarstan region, authorities reported what they described as “massive” drone strikes on Nizhnekamsk, an industrial city located about 1,600 kilometres from Ukraine.
According to the regional authorities, the attack was still ongoing at 05:30 GMT and targeted both industrial and civilian locations.
“The attack is being carried out against both industrial and civilian sites. Unfortunately, there are fatalities,” the authorities said in a statement.
The reported strikes also affected the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine. Local authorities said a woman was killed when a drone struck a house in the village of Novaya Tavolzhanka.
The latest attacks underscore the expanding reach and intensity of drone warfare in the conflict. Both Moscow and Kyiv have increasingly relied on long-range drones to strike military, energy and industrial infrastructure, while civilian areas have also been affected.
The claims from Russian authorities could not be independently verified. Ukraine has not, in the information provided, claimed responsibility for the reported overnight strikes.
With negotiations showing little progress, the continued exchange of long-range attacks points to a conflict increasingly being fought well beyond the immediate battlefront, with communities on both sides facing the consequences.
