Russian missile strikes on Ukraine’s capital early Saturday killed at least nine people and injured more than a dozen others, according to local authorities.
The latest bombardment follows an intensifying Russian aerial campaign that the United Nations says made June the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since April 2022.
Kyiv’s military administration said four people were killed in the attack, while Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 15 people, including two teenage boys aged 13 and 17, were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
“Explosions in the city. Kyiv is under ballistic missile attack. Stay in shelters!” Klitschko wrote on Telegram as the attack unfolded.
Journalists in the city reported hearing repeated explosions, with more than 10 blasts occurring in quick succession. The force of the explosions was strong enough to trigger car alarms across several neighbourhoods.
As Russia continues its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities, Kyiv has also stepped up strikes deep inside Russian territory in recent months, saying the operations are intended to weaken Moscow’s military capabilities and increase pressure for negotiations after more than four years of war.
In Russia, online retailer Wildberries said one of its logistics centres in the southern city of Volgograd caught fire following an overnight attack on Friday, the latest in a series of incidents involving the company’s facilities.
Ukrainian authorities have alleged that Wildberries has been storing components used in drone production and assisting the Russian military, accusations the company has denied.
The latest attacks came days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met U.S. President Donald Trump for talks while both Russia and Ukraine continued exchanging long-range strikes.
Following the meeting, Zelensky said Trump had agreed to allow the licensed production of Patriot missiles in Ukraine. Trump, however, offered few details, saying only that “many things were discussed” and that “the meeting went very well.”
