Russian airstrikes on Kyiv have killed one person and left at least 31 others injured, according to city authorities on Thursday, as Ukraine reported a renewed wave of large-scale attacks following a brief ceasefire.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the capital came under heavy drone and missile fire early Thursday, describing the city as being “under heavy enemy attack” while warning of ongoing ballistic missile strikes.
Head of the Kyiv military administration Tymur Tkachenko confirmed that one person was killed and 16 others wounded in the city, while Ukraine’s emergency services later said injuries across the wider Kyiv region had risen to 31, including a child.
Authorities said multiple districts were hit in both Kyiv city and surrounding areas, with rescue teams deployed through the morning to search through rubble and evacuate survivors from damaged residential buildings.
Emergency responders were seen pulling victims from collapsed structures as fires and debris were reported in several locations, including a residential building and a vehicle park struck during the barrage.
The latest strike came after Russia ended a three-day ceasefire with Ukraine earlier this week. The temporary pause had been announced by US President Donald Trump shortly before Russian leader Vladimir Putin presided over commemorations marking the World War II victory anniversary in Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has since urged Trump to raise efforts to end the conflict during meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
On Wednesday, Zelensky said Russia launched at least 800 drones targeting mainly western parts of Ukraine, with the attacks killing six people and injuring dozens more.
Klitschko said Thursday’s strikes also damaged residential buildings, sparked a vehicle fire in a parking area and caused debris from intercepted rockets to fall on non-residential structures.
