Severe weather has disrupted celebrations marking America’s 250th birthday on Saturday, forcing evacuations and affecting planned events in Washington, DC.
The main rally and speech by United States (US) President Donald Trump were impacted after officials ordered thousands of people on the National Mall to leave due to an approaching thunderstorm.
The event had attracted tens of thousands of people who had braved a heat wave, with temperatures reaching 101°F (38°C).
Police said evacuations were necessary for safety as storms approached the area.
Some attendees left calmly, while others refused to leave, causing brief tension and crowd control challenges.
Police officers started directing people toward exits as they worked to restore order.
Trump had planned a major July Fourth programme, including military flyovers, a political-style rally, and a large fireworks display described as the biggest ever.

Earlier in the day, a parade in Washington was cancelled after the “feels like” temperature rose to 107°F, according to weather reports.
Trump had posted on Truth Social earlier, saying: “Despite the heat… the crowds in DC are INCREDIBLE!”
He also said he planned to deliver a long speech during the celebration.
The anniversary events come at a time of political tension in the US, with visible divisions during public gatherings in Washington.
Pope Leo XIV also commented on the occasion, calling for an inclusive society and saying: “Defending human life also includes welcoming, protecting and assisting immigrants…”
Outside Washington, other cities also marked the anniversary, including New York, which hosted a tall-ship parade and fireworks, and Philadelphia, which held public events at historic sites such as Independence Hall.
