Firefighters have rescued a six-month-old baby alive after a fire broke out in a residential building in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, southwest Nigeria.

According to Punch, the fire happened around 8:38 pm on Saturday at Olomi Compound in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area.

The Oyo State Fire Service, the fire started on the ground floor of a private one-storey building with three rooms after an unattended gas leak.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Fire Services Reform, Morrof Akinwande, said the agency received a distress call from a resident.

“At exactly 20:38 hrs on Saturday, July 11, 2026, our office received a distress call through a telephone call from Mr Abiodun Mayowa reporting a house on fire at Olomi Compound in Ogbomoso,” Akinwande said.

He said firefighters arrived quickly and stopped the flames from spreading to the upper floor and nearby buildings.

“The firefighting crew swiftly commenced operations and successfully extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the upper floor of the building and adjoining property,” he said.

Akinwande confirmed that the six-month-old baby was rescued safely from the burning building.

“A baby of about six months was successfully rescued alive from the burning building. The fire was caused by an unattended gas leak,” he added.

He said fire officials also educated residents on safety measures after the incident.

The chairman urged the public to properly install, inspect and maintain cooking gas cylinders and appliances to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks.

He also advised homeowners, shop owners and businesses to keep suitable fire extinguishers on their premises to improve emergency response.
