Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has expressed support for Omar Abdulkadir Artan, the Somali referee who was denied entry into the United States.

Artan, one of 52 match officials chosen by FIFA for the tournament, had travelled to Miami for a pre-World Cup training camp when immigration authorities ultimately stopped him and ordered his deportation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Somali government said it engaged with relevant authorities to facilitate his travel to the United States, but the efforts did not yield a favourable outcome.

“The Federal Republic of Somalia will continue engaging with relevant partners to seek further clarification regarding this matter and to safeguard the dignity and rights of its citizens,” the statement read.

“Welcome home, Mr Omar Abdulkadir Artan. The Somali people stand proudly with you and celebrate your remarkable achievements.”

The ministry also expressed profound regret over the decision by the United States authorities to deny entry to Artan.

It described Artan’s achievements as inspirational, noting that his success continues to motivate Somali youth and demonstrates that talent, commitment, and perseverance can lead to international recognition.

According to the ministry, Artan has since returned home safely and will continue to carry out his national and international duties with the same professionalism that has defined his career.

Somalia also expressed appreciation to countries, institutions, sporting bodies, and individuals who showed solidarity and support during the period.

The government said it will continue to engage with relevant partners to seek clarification on the decision and safeguard the dignity and rights of its citizens abroad.

Artan, who was named CAF Referee of the Year 2025, is regarded as one of Somalia’s most accomplished sports figures and a source of national pride.

His recognition as CAF Referee of the Year 2025 has been widely celebrated in Somalia, where he is seen as a symbol of sporting excellence and national pride.
