South African human rights champion Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday.

Pillay is recognised for a career spent holding perpetrators of the gravest international crimes to account. She headed the Rwanda genocide tribunal, which prosecuted those responsible for the 1994 atrocities. Last year, she also accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, a position that drew global attention.

Announcing the award in Oslo, committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes said this year’s laureate “has been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are prosecuted.”

The citation underlines the committee’s focus on international justice and accountability. It also signals the weight it places on the work of legal institutions in deterring mass violence and delivering justice to victims.

The Nobel Peace Prize is among the world’s most closely watched honours. This year’s choice puts international criminal law and human rights enforcement at the centre of the global conversation, as conflicts across several regions continue to raise questions about civilian protection and accountability.

For South Africa and the African continent, Pillay’s win is a moment of pride. It highlights the role African leaders and jurists have played in shaping the architecture of international justice.

Her selection is also likely to spark fresh debate over applying international law in ongoing conflicts, particularly in Gaza.
