The death toll from severe flooding in southern China’s Guangxi has risen to 39, with nine people still missing, according to state media reports on Thursday.
The floods are part of a wave of extreme weather that has battered southern and central China this week, bringing torrential rainfall and widespread flooding, while a super typhoon is forecast to affect the country’s eastern provinces this weekend.
According to state news agency Xinhua, 26 of the fatalities were linked to the collapse of the Liulan Reservoir dam, where seven people remain unaccounted for.
Although floodwaters had receded by Wednesday, AFP reporters at Liulan found streets and homes covered in thick mud.
Water continued to surge from the reservoir into a nearby river as rescue teams used large drones to deliver food and emergency supplies to residents stranded across the water.
Earlier footage aired by state broadcaster CCTV showed torrents of water bursting through the collapsed concrete walls of the reservoir, while emergency responders in life jackets carried out rescue operations using inflatable boats.
Residents have also begun clearing debris from their damaged homes, with some using excavators to remove destroyed household belongings as recovery efforts continue.
