South Korea’s head coach, Hong Myung-bo, resigned from his position on Sunday following his team’s disappointing group-stage exit from the World Cup, according to the Yonhap News Agency.
The 57-year-old former national captain took full responsibility for the failure, marking the second time he has overseen an early World Cup departure following a similar group-stage exit during his first stint in 2014.
The national team was expected to advance from Group A, which featured co-hosts Mexico, South Africa, and the Czech Republic.
Instead, South Korea suffered consecutive 1-0 defeats to both South Africa and Mexico, finishing the opening round with only three points after securing a lone 2-1 victory over the Czechs.

The tournament structure left South Korea hoping to squeeze into the knockout rounds as one of the eight best third-placed finishers.
However, results from other matches on Saturday mathematically extinguished those remaining hopes, prompting Hong to step down the following day.
