Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore has resigned as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC) after securing the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election.

The AAC announced Sowore’s resignation in a statement issued on Tuesday shortly after he emerged as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Samuel Ajeigbe was appointed as the party’s new National Chairman following Sowore’s resignation.

“Omoyele Sowore has officially stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress. The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party,” the statement read in part.

The party presented Sowore with its flag as supporters and delegates cheered him on.

While speaking after securing the party’s ticket, Sowore said the AAC was founded to build a “new Nigeria” free from corruption, insecurity, and poor governance.

He lauded the party’s members for remaining committed despite political pressure and economic hardship in Nigeria.

Sowore also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of incompetence and of attempting to manipulate public perception ahead of the 2027 elections.

He also dismissed claims that over 10 million APC members participated in President Bola Tinubu’s presidential primary.

“There is no way APC can have 10 million people as members. I can guarantee you that APC cannot boast of 10,000 members,” Sowore said
