Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken the long-standing Avengers: Endgame record to become the biggest opening weekend movie in North American box office history.
Sony Pictures announced on Monday that the Tom Holland-led superhero film earned $360 million in ticket sales across the United States and Canada during its opening weekend. The movie surpassed the previous record of $357 million set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Sony had initially projected the film would earn $355 million, but stronger-than-expected ticket sales on Sunday pushed it past the historic milestone.
Reacting to the achievement, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman said the studio was proud of the record.
“Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it,” Rothman said.

Before Avengers: Endgame, no film had opened with more than $300 million at the North American box office. Other previous record holders include Avengers: Infinity War, which debuted with $257 million in 2018, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened with $247 million in 2015.
Tom Holland’s previous Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, also delivered a massive opening during the COVID-19 pandemic, earning $260 million domestically before going on to gross $1.9 billion worldwide.
The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, alongside The Odyssey, which also stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, helped deliver a record-breaking weekend for cinemas across North America.
According to Rentrak, the North American box office has generated more than $6.2 billion in ticket sales so far this year, marking an increase of over 15 per cent compared to the same period last year.
