Sudan’s air defence forces shot down multiple armed drones belonging to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) early Thursday morning over the capital region.
An army official confirmed that military units intercepted and destroyed all incoming targets over northern Omdurman, a major military zone near Khartoum.
Anti-aircraft fire and five loud explosions echoed across the capital during the early morning interception.
“Our air defences engaged and shot down all of the militia’s drones that attempted to target areas in northern Omdurman,” a military source told reporters.
Confirming the defence succeeded, the official added, “None of them achieved their objectives.”
The drone strike marks the latest targeted attack on the capital after the army intercepted similar RSF strikes last month.
While the brutal conflict between the army and the RSF has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions since April 2023, Khartoum has experienced a steady return to daily life, with reconstruction under way and roughly 2.3 million displaced residents returning to the capital.
