Moroccan authorities have placed Tangier Mayor Mounir Limouri in police custody over alleged electoral fraud linked to last week’s parliamentary election, a judicial source said.
Speaking to AFP, the source said five other people, including two officials who oversaw polling stations in Tangier, were also placed in pre-trial detention over alleged electoral fraud.
Limouri was detained on the orders of the public prosecutor’s office as part of an investigation into suspected irregularities during the election.

Media reports said he was arrested after arriving at Tangier airport from Spain following the issuance of a warrant over alleged ballot tampering in his constituency.
One polling station official in Tangier was also arrested on election day after allegedly being found with documents intended for ballot tampering, according to media reports.
Limouri, a member of the centre-right Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), which won the election, had previously denied any involvement in the reported incident.
Morocco’s ruling coalition secured a majority in last week’s parliamentary election, although the vote recorded the country’s lowest turnout in two decades and was followed by reports of electoral fraud in Tangier.
The Interior Ministry said an investigation into the allegations was ongoing.

The PAM won 97 of the 395 seats in the House of Representatives, while the National Rally of Independents (RNI), which leads the outgoing coalition, finished second with 66 seats.
The election result means Morocco is expected to appoint its next prime minister from the PAM.
Fouzi Lekjaa, the budget minister and president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, has been identified as a possible candidate, while PAM national coordinator Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, who is also territorial planning minister and mayor of Marrakesh, has also been mentioned as a potential candidate.
