A military-escorted civilian convoy in Northern Ghana came under attack on Monday, leaving three civilians dead and one other injured, the Ghana Armed Forces said.

In a statement, the military said the convoy, which was transporting about 140 civilians from Bawku to Bolgatanga, was ambushed at Binduri by unidentified gunmen.

Security forces reportedly returned fire and killed seven of the attackers.

The military added that personnel later recovered a locally made firearm, a G3 rifle and ammunition from one suspect who tried to escape.

Ten other suspects have been arrested and are assisting investigators, according to the statement.

The armed forces urged the public not to interfere with ongoing security operations and extended condolences to the families of those killed.

The latest violence adds to the long-running unrest in and around Bawku, where tensions linked largely to chieftaincy disputes between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities have lasted for decades.

The area has experienced repeated clashes, reprisals, curfews and heavy deployments of soldiers and police, with attacks affecting civilians, traders and security personnel.

Despite mediation efforts by successive governments and traditional leaders, the dispute remains unresolved, leaving the region as one of Ghana’s most persistent security flashpoints.
