US President Donald Trump stated Sunday that he expects indirect talks with Tehran to resume this week, despite recently rejecting an Iranian proposal to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Trump claimed Iranian leaders pushed for the truce because “they are losing so badly,” adding, “They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make. It is what we would have maybe agreed to a year ago.”
He noted that Iran ultimately “overplayed their hand” during negotiations.

Reports indicate Qatari mediators will facilitate the upcoming indirect discussions following preliminary meetings between US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at the UN General Assembly.
Meanwhile, military tensions remain high along the critical shipping corridor, where a major volume of oil recently transited despite ongoing blockades.
When asked directly about potential military action, Trump warned, “I am always thinking about it,” amid reports that Washington considers renewing strikes against Iranian targets after the upcoming US midterm elections.
