President Donald Trump is set to launch the United States’ 250th Independence Day weekend on Friday with a visit to one of the country’s most recognisable landmarks, Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
On the eve of July 4, Trump will deliver a speech beneath the carved granite faces of four former presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The location carries added symbolism, with critics noting Trump’s long-standing fascination with presidential legacy and national monuments.
Supporters in Congress have even proposed legislation seeking to add Trump’s likeness to Mount Rushmore alongside the four historical figures, a move that has intensified debate over how the president is shaping the anniversary celebrations.
The Independence Day programme continues on July 4 with a large-scale political rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The event will feature military flyovers and what Trump has described as “the world’s biggest fireworks display,” reinforcing his campaign-style approach to the national milestone.
Trump’s public persona has long been tied to spectacle and visibility.

“Trump likes the spotlight, and I think he’s trying to take the spotlight,” said Peter Loge, director of George Washington University’s School of Media.
However, the celebrations are taking place against a backdrop of political division and declining approval ratings. Public concerns over the economy and foreign policy, including the war in Iran, have weighed on his support, while Democrats continue to criticise his immigration agenda and broader use of executive power.
Some anniversary events linked to Trump-aligned groups have also drawn criticism. A “Great American State Fair” in Washington saw low turnout and online ridicule over empty exhibition booths. Earlier, a White House lawn UFC event sparked controversy after an in-ring comment falsely referenced former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Extreme summer heat is also forecast across Washington during the weekend, with temperatures expected to reach around 41°C, adding logistical pressure to the outdoor events.
Despite the political tension, Americans remain split over the holiday’s meaning. While some see it as increasingly politicised, others maintain its broader significance.
