Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dismissed the country’s deputy education minister, Nazif Yilmaz, following two separate school shootings that left nine people dead, according to an official decree published late Friday.

Eight students aged 10 and 11, along with a teacher, were killed earlier this month when a 14-year-old gunman opened fire at a school in the southern province of Kahramanmaras.

Authorities said the attacker died at the scene after arriving with five firearms. Officials added that he was the son of a former police inspector, who has since been arrested.

In a separate incident in southeastern Sanliurfa province, a former student reportedly opened fire at his previous high school before taking his own life when confronted by police.

Under the decree signed by Erdogan, Yilmaz was removed from office and replaced by Cihad Demirli.

The shootings have triggered widespread public anger, with Erdogan saying the government would introduce new measures, including tighter restrictions on gun ownership.
