Police in Edo State have arrested two men for conspiring to stage a fake kidnapping and demanding a ₦4 million ransom from relatives, the command said on Sunday.

Lucky Alabi, 48, and Taiye Enahoro, 37, both from Uneme Akpama Community, were arrested on 26 June 2026 following an intelligence-led investigation, according to a police statement.

The alleged crime occurred on 23 June 2026, when Enahoro reportedly placed several phone calls to Alabi’s relatives, falsely claiming that Alabi had been kidnapped and demanding ₦4 million for his release.

“Acting on credible intelligence and through diligent investigative efforts, police operatives uncovered the deception and successfully arrested both suspects as preliminary investigation reveals that the criminal plan was executed on 23rd June, 2026, when Taiye Enahoro allegedly placed several telephone calls to relatives of Lucky Alabi, falsely claiming that Alabi had been kidnapped and demanding the sum of Four Million Naira (₦4,000,000) as ransom for his release,” the statement read.

The suspects have confessed to their roles in the staged kidnapping and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation, police said.

Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, warned the public against engaging in criminal deception, including staging kidnappings to extort money from relatives.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to bringing all persons involved in criminal acts to justice and urged members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities.
