The US extended a temporary sanctions waiver for Serbian oil company NIS on Friday, allowing the firm to import crude and operate its sole refinery through August 28.
The US Treasury granted the extension as negotiations continue over selling the majority Russian-owned stake to Hungarian energy giant MOL.
Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic welcomed the waiver, noting that low Danube River levels have restricted fuel imports and made domestic refining critical for Serbia’s energy supply.
Hungarian energy giant MOL confirmed that Washington also extended the deadline to finalise the acquisition of the Russian-owned shares to August 28.
NIS supplies roughly 80 per cent of the domestic market, making full refinery capacity essential for national energy security.
While the extension provides temporary relief, Serbian officials noted that lingering uncertainty remains a challenge as President Aleksandar Vucic aims to complete the transaction by the end of September.
