The United States (US) has ordered its nationals in Iran to take advantage of Iran’s partially reopened airspace and exit the country.

Iran shut its airspace at the start of the ongoing escalation between it, Israel and the US on February 28, 2026, grounding flights in and out of the country. It partially reopened it to international transit flights on April 18, 2026. Some airports have also resumed operations, including major hubs in the capital, Tehran.

The US issued an advisory on Wednesday, encouraging its nationals to monitor local media for updates and consult with commercial carriers for additional information on flights out of Iran.

It also warned them against travelling to Afghanistan, Iraq, or the Pakistan-Iran border area. Americans seeking to depart Iran may also depart by land to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Turkmenistan.

It informed its citizens that the Iranian government may prevent US citizens from departing or charge an “exit fee” for departures from Iran and advised U.S.-Iranian dual nationals to exit Iran on Iranian passports.

“Iranian police and security personnel may operate roadside checkpoints using unmarked vehicles such as taxis. The Iranian government does not recognize dual nationality and will treat U.S.-Iranian dual nationals solely as Iranian citizens,” the advisory read.

“U.S. citizens are at significant risk of questioning, arrest, and detention in Iran. Showing a U.S. passport or demonstrating connections to the United States can be reason enough for Iranian authorities to detain someone. U.S. citizens who do not have a valid U.S. passport in their possession should apply for one at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate after departing Iran.”

US citizens who choose to stay in Iran are urged to find a secure location within their residence or another safe building and maintain communication with family and friends to inform them of their status.
