WAFCON: South Africa Draw 2-2 With Ivory Coast

South Africa rescued a dramatic 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Friday, keeping their quarter-final hopes alive despite remaining bottom of Group B.

Hildah Magaia scored a ninth-minute added-time equaliser after Thembi Kgatlana sparked a second-half comeback, cancelling out two first-half goals from Ivorian forward Grace Sery.

The result leaves former champions South Africa with one point from two matches, behind Ivory Coast on four points and Burkina Faso and Tanzania on three each.

Banyana Banyana must defeat Burkina Faso on Tuesday and rely on an Ivory Coast victory over Tanzania to secure advancement.

A failure to advance would derail their campaign to qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, which awards automatic berths to all four WAFCON semi-finalists.

In Friday’s second Group B fixture, 10-woman Tanzania fell 2-1 to Burkina Faso after captain Balkissa Sawadogo struck an 80th-minute winner.

Naomi Kabre initially put Burkina Faso ahead before Hasnath Ubamba received a red card for fouling the Burkinabe goalkeeper.

Tanzania temporarily equalised through Aisha Mnunka before Sawadogo sealed Burkina Faso’s first-ever WAFCON victory.
