Brighton striker Danny Welbeck rolled back the years on Saturday, scoring twice to lead his club to a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at the Amex Stadium.

Moving into the role of the league’s top English scorer this season, the 35-year-old forward dealt a massive blow to the visitors’ Champions League aspirations.

The result leaves Arne Slot’s side in fifth place, struggling to find consistency amidst a mounting injury list that now includes top scorer Hugo Ekitike.

The match began with early misfortune for Liverpool as Ekitike was forced off just minutes after kickoff, followed by Welbeck’s opening header in the 14th minute.

Although a defensive error from Brighton captain Lewis Dunk allowed Milos Kerkez to equalise for the Reds before halftime, the hosts remained the more dangerous side.

Welbeck ultimately secured the three points in the 56th minute, finishing a slick team move that stood following a lengthy VAR check for offside.

The victory keeps Brighton firmly in the hunt for European football, marking their fourth win in five Premier League outings.

For Liverpool, the defeat compounds a difficult week that saw them lose both Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah to injury.

While they remain in the hunt for the FA Cup and Champions League, their domestic form has faltered at a critical juncture, leaving them just one point ahead of a surging Chelsea in the race for the top five.
