West Ham United’s 3-0 loss to Brentford has provided Tottenham with a vital opportunity to escape the Premier League relegation zone.

While Spurs currently sit two points from safety, a win against Aston Villa on Sunday would pull them out of the bottom three.

The Hammers’ defeat was only their third in 11 matches, while the victory for Brentford revitalised their hopes for European qualification and moved them up to sixth place.

The match at Brentford was marked by misfortune for West Ham’s Konstantinos Mavropanos, who scored an own goal after a contested challenge and later saw a potential equaliser overturned by VAR for offside.

Brentford capitalised on their momentum in the second half, with Igor Thiago netting a penalty and Mikkel Damsgaard adding a third goal to seal the win.

This result adds significant pressure to West Ham as they prepare to face title contenders Arsenal next weekend.

In other action, Newcastle United distanced themselves from the relegation scrap with a 3-1 victory over Brighton, ending a five-game skid and moving to 13th place.

Meanwhile, Sunderland’s European aspirations suffered a setback following a 1-1 draw against last-place Wolves, a match where they played with 10 men for over an hour.

At the top of the table, Arsenal prepare to host Fulham; a win would give them a six-point lead over Manchester City, though City hold two games in hand.

Arsenal see the return of Bukayo Saka, though captain Martin Odegaard remains sidelined by injury.
