World leaders expressed shock and relief following a dramatic shooting incident at a prestigious media gala in Washington on Saturday night.

The event, attended by US President Donald Trump, was disrupted when a lone gunman opened fire, aiming to target the President. The suspect, armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives, was swiftly apprehended by US law enforcement, preventing further chaos. There were no casualties reported.

Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, shared his shock, condemning any attack on democratic institutions or the freedom of the press.

“Any attack on democratic institutions or on the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,” Starmer posted on X.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his relief that both Trump and the First Lady were unharmed.

“We are relieved that the President and the First Lady are safe and strong,” Netanyahu wrote, also sending his wishes to the injured police officer, praising the swift response of the US Secret Service.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined global leaders in condemning the violence, saying, “Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned.”

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Political violence has no place in any democracy,” and extended his thoughts to all those shaken by the event.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also offered her respect to the President and his wife, saying, “Violence must never be the way.”

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif both condemned the attack, with Sanchez emphasising that “violence is never the answer,” and Sharif offering his prayers for the President’s continued safety.
