An overloaded minivan collided with a truck in central China on Thursday, killing 13 people and injuring three, according to traffic police.
Authorities said the van, which had a maximum seating capacity of nine passengers but was carrying 16 people, struck the rear of a semi-trailer truck while travelling on an expressway in Henan province at about 2:40 am local time (1840 GMT Wednesday).
The traffic management bureau of China’s Ministry of Public Security said on social media that the crash occurred on the G40 expressway in Nanyang city, where the minivan “rear-ended a semi-trailer truck travelling ahead of it”.

Officials added that the ministry “attached great importance” to the incident and immediately dispatched a working group to Nanyang to oversee investigations and coordinate response efforts.
Deadly road accidents are relatively common in China, often linked to overloading, weak enforcement of safety regulations and dangerous driving practices on highways and rural roads.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, and investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
