Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson today, May 28, 2026, in Sweden, where discussions on fighter jet support for Ukraine are expected to take centre stage.
Zelensky confirmed the visit in a post on X(formerly Twitter), saying both countries were preparing a major defence package that would include significant progress on Gripen fighter jets, which he said would enhance Ukraine’s air combat capabilities.

“We are preparing a major defence package for Ukraine and a strong step regarding Gripen fighter jets, which will definitely make our combat aviation more effective,” he said.
Swedish media outlet Aftonbladet reported that Stockholm may announce the transfer of older JAS 39 Gripen C and D aircraft to Ukraine, alongside the opening of negotiations for the possible sale of newer E-model jets.
Both countries signed a letter of intent in October 2025 outlining Ukraine’s interest in acquiring between 100 and 150 Gripen E aircraft. Although non-binding and without a delivery timeline, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson had previously indicated that initial deliveries could begin within three years if plans proceed as expected.
The leaders are expected to hold a joint press conference at an air base in Uppsala, north of Stockholm, later today.
Zelensky has previously described the Gripen system as a priority for Ukraine’s military, though Sweden had earlier paused plans to supply the jets after allied countries prioritised American F-16 deliveries.
