Eritrean President Afwerki Dismisses Tigray Abuse Claims

Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki has dismissed allegations of abuses committed by his country’s forces in the conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray region as “fantasy.”

In rare public comments made during a visit to Kenya, the only leader Eritrea has known since independence, spoke to pressmen and rejected claims of rape, looting and other human rights violations by Eritrean forces in Tigray.

Despite allegations from human rights groups and UN experts, Afwerki denied any involvement in the peace process in Ethiopia and accused those making the allegations of spreading lies and misinformation to disrupt the peace process.

Kenyan President William Ruto praised the “huge progress” in Ethiopia’s peace process, which was facilitated by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
