The military government in Burkina Faso said it has thwarted a coup attempt on Tuesday by security and intelligence services, without providing details.
The release added that they planned to destabilise the country with “the dark intention of attacking the institutions of the Republic and plunging our country in chaos.”
None of the coup plotters were mentioned but four people had been detained and the search for two persons on the run, has been intensified. “Investigations will help unmask the instigators of this plot,” it added.
On Monday the junta suspended French news magazine Jeune Afrique for publishing “untruthful” articles that reported tension and discontent within Burkina Faso’s armed forces.
The next day thousands of pro-junta demonstrators hit to the streets of the capital Ouagadougou and elsewhere to show their support, citing rumours of a brewing mutiny in the army.
Captain Ibrahim Traore came to power after two military coups last year, triggered in part by a worsening insurgency by armed groups linked to terrorists that have destabilised Burkina Faso and its neighbours in the region.
