The Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC) has initiated a massive mobilisation campaign targeting Nigerians residing in Cote d’Ivoire to rally support for the Super Eagles in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The continental spectacle is scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11 in six stadiums across five cities in Cote d’Ivoire.
Bright Urenyere, Chairman of the Mobilisation Committee for NFSC’s Cote d’Ivoire chapter, stated that they have been actively engaging the local Nigerian community to encourage their presence at the tournament.
NFSC, with over 500 registered members in Cote d’Ivoire, aims to strengthen support by mobilising more than 1,000 Nigerians to cheer for the Super Eagles.
Urenyere expressed concern about the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan allegedly working with an unknown supporters club called “Authentic” while sidelining NFSC, an established group that has been operating for over 30 years. He appealed for fairness and urged the Nigerian Ambassador to intervene, emphasising the need for unity to maximise support for the Super Eagles.
The National Chairman of the NFSC, Amb. Samuel Ikpea, assured that the club was working tirelessly to ensure robust support for the Super Eagles during the tournament. He stated that NFSC leadership is in communication with relevant stakeholders to unite all factions for the cohesive backing of the national team.
The Super Eagles are set to begin their AFCON campaign against Equatorial Guinea on January 14, followed by matches against hosts Cote d’Ivoire on January 18 and Guinea-Bissau on January 22.
