Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit have impounded 278 commercial motorcycles during a week-long enforcement exercise targeting operators violating the state’s ban on commercial motorcycle operations.

The agency’s Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, disclosed this in a statement signed by the spokesperson, Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, on Sunday.

Akerele said the operation was conducted in line with the Lagos State Government’s directive prohibiting commercial motorcycles from operating on highways and other restricted routes, as stipulated in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

He said the exercise was aimed at strengthening security, protecting lives and property, and curbing criminal activities across the state.

According to him, the enforcement drive also reflects the renewed commitment of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, to maintaining security and public order.

Akerele noted that the week-long operation followed an earlier crackdown carried out weeks ago and reaffirmed the agency’s determination to sustain enforcement against traffic, environmental and security violations.

The exercise covered several locations, including Ikorodu, Agric Bus Stop, Festac First Gate, Mazamaza, Iyana School, Iyana-Iba, Idimu Road, Egbeda, Kola Bus Stop, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun Roundabout, Ajaiye in Ojokoro and Berger Bus Stop.

He said several commercial motorcycle operators were arrested for illegally plying highways and restricted routes.

“Some were found using motorcycles to transport illicit substances and hazardous items such as petroleum products and gas.

“Others were conveying school children and toddlers in unsafe conditions on major roads,” he said.

Akerele said the operation restored order and improved compliance in the affected areas.

He added that all impounded motorcycles would be processed for forfeiture to the Lagos State Government through the courts in line with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

The chairman reiterated the agency’s resolve to sustain enforcement until full compliance is achieved.

“We will not be cowed or fold our arms and allow people of criminal intent to overrun Lagos or surrender to their illegalities,” Akerele said.
