Manchester City’s remarkable 32-match unbeaten run in the Premier League came to a surprising halt on Saturday as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth, handing Liverpool the chance to take the top spot in the table.
Bournemouth scored through Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson, while Josko Gvardiol pulled one back for the visitors late in the match. This defeat marked City’s first league loss since December, following their midweek exit from the League Cup at the hands of Tottenham, exacerbated by a series of injuries.
Semenyo opened the scoring in the ninth minute, expertly spinning onto Milos Kerkez’s cross to find the net. Just after the hour mark, Evanilson doubled Bournemouth’s lead by steering home another precise delivery from Kerkez.
Gvardiol gave City a glimmer of hope with a towering header from Ilkay Gundogan’s cross, reducing the deficit to 2-1 with just eight minutes remaining. However, Erling Haaland came agonisingly close to equalising in stoppage time, only to see his shot strike the post from point-blank range.
With this loss, City now finds themselves two points behind Liverpool, who came from behind to win 2-1 against Brighton at Anfield. Fortunately for City, title rivals Arsenal also suffered a defeat, losing 1-0 to Newcastle, softening the blow of their unexpected loss.
