The Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board has prohibited street hawking and other unauthorized activities within Maiduguri metropolis.
In a statement released on Friday, the board’s General Manager, Mr. Limán Mustapha, announced that the ban aligns with the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Law of 2002.
The restrictions include street hawking, operations by tricycle operators, and generator mechanics in the areas surrounding Maiduguri’s Post Office and Monday Market.
Additionally, the board has outlawed activities on pedestrian walkways, junctions, and roundabouts, as well as the sale of engine oil on road reservations, the dumping of sand or construction materials, the mixing of cement on roads, and the drilling of boreholes near roadsides.
Mr. Mustapha stated that individuals and groups affected by this directive have been instructed to vacate the designated sites immediately.
“The board has no alternative but to arrest and prosecute defaulters in a court of law,” adding that the measure would ensure a clean, safe and organise urban environment in Maiduguri and other parts of the state.
He called on residents and business owners to comply with the ban to avoid legal action.
