Father, Daughter Beheaded in Delta Over Land Dispute

With more than 300 ethnic groups, Nigeria often struggles with outbreaks of intercommunal or ethnic violence, and herder-farmer disputes are common. Nigerian officials are promoting a plan to give traditionally nomadic Fulani herders their own land on dozens of designated reservations, arguing it can stop confrontation by preventing cattle from wandering onto farms and settlements. Tragedy struck in the Amai community, Ukwuani Local Government Area, Delta State, as a 70-year-old man, Mr Aghanti, and his 50-year-old daughter, Mrs Atagoshi, were reportedly beheaded over a land dispute.

The brutal killings took place after a suspect allegedly lured the victims into the bush under the guise of discussing the land issue. Their decapitated bodies were later found in the bush.

Mrs Atagoshi, a secondary school teacher, had previously purchased a plot of land in the community, which had since been contested by other individuals.

Confirming the horrific incident, DSP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that the suspect invited the woman and her father to the bush, where they were murdered and beheaded.

The bodies were discovered after vigilantes apprehended a man named Emeke, who was found in possession of two human heads. He was mobbed and set ablaze by angry locals. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the heads belonged to the father and daughter.

The main suspect remains at large, with police efforts ongoing to apprehend him.
