Former Minister of Science and Technology, Olorunnibe Mamora, has stated that the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly was in accordance with the Constitution.
Obasa was recently impeached by the state lawmakers and replaced with Mojisola Meranda while he was in the United States. The impeachment followed allegations of fraudulent practices and other claims against Obasa.
Upon his return to Nigeria, Obasa denied the impeachment, asserting that the process did not follow due procedure. He challenged his accusers to provide evidence, stating that he had documentation for all expenditures during his tenure as Speaker.
In response, Mamora pointed to Section 92 of the Constitution, which stipulates that a two-thirds majority of lawmakers is required to impeach a Speaker. He emphasised that the impeachment was carried out after allegations were presented, and while the truth of the claims is for the assembly to determine, the process itself was constitutional.
Mamora also noted that if Obasa had disrespected the office of the Governor, such conduct would be unacceptable, as the Governor is the chief executive and deserves respect from all quarters.
