Veteran entertainer and social commentator Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has defended his decision to support his two daughters identifying as lesbians, emphasising that unconditional love and child happiness drive his parenting philosophy.
In an exclusive interview with Saturday Beats, the eccentric artist addressed social media backlash, explaining that his youngest daughter came out years ago, while his eldest daughter—who has already provided him with six grandchildren and a great-grandson—came out more recently.
Charly Boy acknowledged that processing the news required an initial adjustment, particularly regarding his younger daughter, Dominique, who had not yet had children.

“Get it clear, I actually have two daughters who are lesbians,” Charly Boy stated. “This is the same woman who gave me six grandchildren and a great-grandson. If she decides that she no longer likes men and prefers to be a lesbian, so be it. My only concern is for her to be happy.”
He added that as long as adult children remain self-sufficient, parents must adapt: “Because I love my children deeply, I adapted quickly. I didn’t want to be an old-fashioned, rigid father; I wanted to be a supportive, open father.”
The activist also reflected on modern parenting strategies, noting that authoritarian methods fail with younger generations. “As a parent, I’ve learnt that with millennials and Gen Zs, you don’t tell them what to do; you can only advise them… The days of beating and commanding are gone and can’t come back,” he noted.
Beyond family matters, Charly Boy revealed his close bond with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing the elder statesman as a daily confidant, father figure, and friend with whom he holds hours-long discussions on life and religion.
