Sri Lanka Minister Blames Monkey for Nationwide Blackout

A nationwide power outage in Sri Lanka has been attributed to a monkey entering a power station south of Colombo.

“A monkey has come in contact with our grid transformer, causing an imbalance in the system,” Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody told reporters.

The Ceylon Electricity Board, Sri Lanka’s national power provider, announced that the power outage resulted from an emergency at a substation in south Colombo but did not provide additional information.

Power is slowly being restored throughout the island, home to 22 million inhabitants, prioritising medical facilities and water purification systems.

The outage began around 11:00 local time (05:30 GMT) on Sunday, forcing many people to depend on generators. Officials indicate that it may take several hours to restore electricity fully.

On social media, individuals criticised the authorities while also poking fun at the situation.

A report released Monday said that engineers have been alerting successive governments “for years” to improve the power grid to avoid frequent blackouts.
