Sudan and Iran have agreed to enhance bilateral relations through strengthened cooperation in trade, diplomacy, and post-war reconstruction, Sudan’s state news agency reported on Tuesday.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yusuf met with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, in Tehran on Monday to discuss ways to expand ties and establish a structured plan for long-term collaboration, according to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA).

As part of the agreement, the two countries will boost trade and economic exchanges, with plans to convene a ministerial committee in the coming months.

Sudan, Iran Sign Agreements to Boost Trade and Post-War Reconstruction

Iran has committed to playing an active role in Sudan’s post-war reconstruction.

The country has been grappling with an ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023.

The war has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 14 million, according to UN and local authorities, though research from US universities estimates the death toll at around 130,000.

During their meeting, Yusuf and Araghchi signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for mutual visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic, special, and official passports.

Another MoU was signed to establish a political consultation committee between their foreign ministries.

Yusuf, who arrived in Tehran on Monday for an unspecified duration, also met with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf as part of his official visit.
