A dramatic rescue operation in Serbia succeeded late Wednesday after emergency responders pulled the last trapped worker from a collapsed trench, eight hours after the accident occurred, police confirmed.
The collapse happened in the village of Petka, near Lazarevac, about 65 kilometres (40 miles) from Belgrade, when a group of workers became buried under soil while digging a sewer pipeline trench. The earth caved in at a depth of about three metres, trapping three workers beneath the rubble.
Serbia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Ivica Dačić, praised the efforts of the rescue teams, writing on Instagram: “Rescued after eight hours. Endless thanks to the firefighter-rescuers.”

A team of 20 firefighter-rescuers rushed to the scene following reports of the incident. However, during the delicate operation, another section of the trench collapsed, momentarily trapping one of the rescuers as well.
Despite the added danger, the team managed to free both the injured rescuer and two of the buried workers relatively quickly. The third worker, however, remained trapped for several more hours before finally being pulled to safety.
“All three workers have been rescued, and they are all well. One of the firefighters, who also experienced a soil collapse, is also well,” Dačić confirmed.
