Greenland Rejects Trump’s Claim to Annex the Island

The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s renewed pledge to take over the Arctic territory, saying on Wednesday that Greenlanders would decide their own future.

Trump, in a speech to the US Congress, reiterated his ambition to annex Greenland, either through diplomatic means or force, while also declaring plans to reclaim the Panama Canal.

Egede dismissed Trump’s remarks, asserting, “We don’t want to be Americans, or Danes either. We are Greenlanders.” With Greenland’s legislative elections approaching, independence remains a key issue.

Denmark also rebuffed Trump’s expansionist vision, with Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stating that US annexation “won’t happen.”

Trump, who previously sought to buy Greenland in 2019, claimed the US would “make Greenland rich” and ensure its security. However, his comments sparked strong reactions in both Greenland and Denmark, reinforcing their stance on self-determination.
