Liverpool managed to overcome a scare from Southampton, with Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez leading the comeback in a 3-1 victory that pushed the Premier League leaders 16 points ahead on Saturday.

Arne Slot’s team was shaken by Will Smallbone’s first-half goal for bottom-placed Southampton at Anfield. However, Liverpool regained their poise after the break, with the often-criticized Nunez levelling the score before winning the penalty that Salah successfully converted to give them the lead.

Salah scored another penalty, bringing his total to 32 goals in all competitions this season as the Reds inch closer to a record-tying 20th English title and their first since 2020.

In second place, the Arsenal has two games in hand over the Gunners, including a match against Manchester United on Sunday.

Nevertheless, Liverpool’s unstoppable push for the title appears assured, regardless of how the Gunners perform in the closing weeks of what is becoming an extraordinary inaugural season for Slot after succeeding Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds are pursuing a treble and will aim to finish off Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday after securing a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 last Wednesday.

Following that, Liverpool will travel to Wembley on March 16, seeking to claim the first trophy of the Slot era against Newcastle in the League Cup final.

After these events, Liverpool, with only one league defeat this season, will have nine matches remaining to clinch the title.

Struggling 13 points behind safety, Southampton still requires two more points to equal Derby’s Premier League record low of 11 points in an entire season.

Owing to an unusual scheduling situation, this was Liverpool’s sole league matchup in March.
