Despite his success, his career was affected by legal troubles after he was convicted of habitual propofol use in 2021. He received a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years.

Following his conviction, Wheesung focused on live performances rather than television appearances. He was due to hold a concert in Daegu on March 15.

His passing comes less than a month after the death of actress Kim Sae-ron, whose career had declined following a drunk driving incident in 2022.

His agency, Tajoy Entertainment, expressed deep sorrow over his passing. His mother, who lives in the same apartment building, discovered him after he failed to meet his manager earlier that day.
