Al-Shabaab has been in conflict with the Somali federal government for more than 15 years, and analysts note that it has become an escalating threat in recent months.

The group maintains a presence in Boni Forest, which lies along the Kenya-Somalia border and frequently confronts Kenyan forces.

In addition, it has executed several deadly attacks further into Kenya previously, partially in retaliation for Kenya’s military intervention against the group in Somalia.
