The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Wednesday that it has received the contact information, including addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of representatives associated with the petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.
The electoral commission confirmed on Tuesday that the petition to recall Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was received but indicated it did not fulfill the necessary “requirements” for such action. INEC remarked that the petitioners’ representatives failed to include their contact details in the cover letter that accompanied the petition, as stipulated in Clause 1 (f) of their Regulations and Guidelines.
However, in a statement on Wednesday, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, reported that the previously missing information has now been supplied in a letter addressed to the Commission’s Chairman dated Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
“Further to the statement issued yesterday, Tuesday 25th March 2025, the Commission hereby confirms that the contact address of representatives of the petitioners, their telephone numbers and e-mail addresses have now been provided in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Commission dated today, Wednesday 26th March 2025.
“As provided in Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024, a letter has been written to notify the Senator sought to be recalled about the receipt of the petition and delivered to her official address. The same letter has been copied to the Senate’s presiding officer and published on the Commission’s website.” The statement said.
The next step involves reviewing the petitioners’ signatures to confirm that the petition has been endorsed by more than half (over 50%) of the registered voters in the Constituency. Olumekun said this process will be carried out in the coming days, and the results will be publicly announced, determining the Commission’s next course of action. The Commission reassured Nigerians that the entire process will be conducted transparently.
