Rangers staged a dramatic late comeback from 2-0 down with 10 men to snatch a 2-2 draw at Aberdeen on Sunday, denying Celtic the chance to seal the Scottish Premiership title.
Celtic remain all but certain to claim a fourth straight league crown, boasting a 15-point lead with five matches left and a vastly superior goal difference of 42 over Rangers. However, Ianis Hagi’s 95th-minute equaliser at Pittodrie ensured the title could not be mathematically secured just yet, while simultaneously damaging Aberdeen’s ambitions of qualifying for European competition.
Rangers, with one eye on the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, fielded a much-changed side. Interim manager Barry Ferguson made nine changes from the goalless draw in the first leg, retaining only goalkeeper Liam Kelly and Robin Propper—who had been sent off in midweek.
Despite the shake-up, Rangers found themselves in a familiar predicament, falling two goals behind for the sixth time in seven league outings. Aberdeen took the lead on 30 minutes thanks to a superb free-kick from Leighton Clarkson. Matters worsened for the visitors when Ross McCausland was dismissed after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.
Just before the interval, Pape Gueye doubled Aberdeen’s lead, seemingly ending the contest and all but confirming Celtic’s title.
However, Rangers regrouped after the break. Hamza Igamane capitalised on a defensive error to reduce the deficit, injecting fresh hope into their efforts. Aberdeen squandered several chances to re-establish their cushion and were made to pay for their profligacy.
Kevin Nisbet thought he had sealed the win late on, only for his goal to be chalked off for handball following a VAR review. Then, deep into stoppage time, Cyriel Dessers rattled the post before the rebound was worked back into the box. Jefte teed up Hagi, who curled in a brilliant effort into the top corner to rescue a point.
The result leaves Aberdeen in fifth place, level on 50 points with Hibernian and Dundee United, as the race for a European spot intensifies.
