Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is determined to spoil Liverpool’s Premier League title celebrations, despite his childhood admiration for the Anfield club.
Liverpool will clinch their 20th English title if they avoid defeat against struggling Tottenham on Sunday.
However, in stark contrast to Liverpool’s potential triumph, Tottenham could match their record for most defeats in a Premier League season if they lose for a 19th time this weekend.
Postecoglou’s early affection for Liverpool has been suggested as a reason why he might not mind if the Reds celebrate their title in front of him at Anfield. Tottenham, meanwhile, are also focused on next week’s Europa League semi-final first leg against Bodo/Glimt.
But Postecoglou made it clear that he would love to halt Liverpool’s celebrations with an unexpected victory.
“I’m almost 60 years old; I’ve moved on from my boyhood crushes, so it has no impact whatsoever,” the Australian manager told reporters on Friday.

“I have great admiration for the football club. Yes, I supported it when I was younger, but that was over 50 years ago, so we’ve long since moved on.”
“You want to go there and compete against a very good team and compete well. It’s not just about getting through unscathed; you want to leave having played well against the top team. Irrespective of what’s ahead, that’s the main priority.”
Tottenham will be without Son Heung-min due to a foot injury, which means Cristian Romero may be called upon to captain the team. Romero made headlines earlier this week when he expressed an openness to a future move to La Liga.
However, the Argentine defender also revealed his ambition to win the Europa League, which would be Tottenham’s first major trophy since the 2008 League Cup.
“I haven’t seen the report in detail, but it’s like me—if you get asked a question, you’ve got to answer it,” Postecoglou said.
“I’m sure if you asked me a lot of questions about my future, you’d probably get some great headlines as well, but it doesn’t change anything.”
“Do you know what’s important right now? It’s not Cristian Romero’s future or anyone else’s; it’s that we have an unbelievable opportunity to achieve something special at this football club, and that’s what we’re concentrating on.”
