England captain Ben Stokes shocked the cricket world on Sunday by announcing his immediate retirement from international cricket during the fourth day of the decisive third Test against New Zealand.

The 35-year-old all-rounder informed his teammates in the Trent Bridge dressing room before play began, and news filtered out to a stunned Nottingham crowd right as he prepared to bowl his 11th over.

In a moment of pure sporting theatre, Stokes received a massive standing ovation from the spectators and immediately forced batsman Zak Foulkes into a slip catch on his very next ball, sparking raucous cheers.

The bombshell announcement follows a turbulent month for the skipper, who had only just returned to the squad after a midnight curfew violation at a London nightclub involving teammate Gus Atkinson.

Management dropped both players from the second Test at the Oval, which England lost by 253 runs to level the three-match series at 1-1.

While Stokes escaped heavy disciplinary action with a written conduct warning, he dropped hints about his uncertain international future during a press conference on Wednesday, stating that he was focusing exclusively on the New Zealand finale.

In an emotional video clip shared by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Stokes told his teammates that these would be his final two days representing England and leading the side.

He noted that while the reasons for his exit could wait, he had made “many trips to the well” for the team and asked for one final, collective push to finish the match with total commitment.

Stokes has captained the Test side since 2022 and has anchored England’s most historic modern victories since his debut 15 years ago.

ECB Chairman Richard Thompson praised Stokes as a talismanic figure and one of England’s greatest-ever cricketers.

Stokes’s legendary career includes an unbeaten 84 that secured the 2019 World Cup at Lord’s, a heroic 135 not out to win the 2019 Headingley Ashes Test, a blistering 258 against South Africa in 2016, and more than 250 Test wickets.

Thompson emphasised that Stokes’s relentless competitiveness and ability to deliver under extreme pressure leave behind an enduring legacy that defined a generation.
