Italy Urges Israel to Halt Gaza Strikes: ‘Enough with the Attacks’

Italy has intensified its criticism of Israel’s military bombardment of Gaza, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani calling for an immediate end to the attacks during remarks on Saturday.

Speaking while on a visit to Sicily, Tajani said, “Enough with the attacks. We no longer want to see the Palestinian people suffer.” His comments were shared by his spokesperson and mark one of the strongest public rebukes from the Italian government since the conflict escalated.

Tajani called for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, but stressed the need to protect civilians caught in the violence. “Let’s come to a ceasefire, let’s free the hostages, but let’s leave people who are victims of Hamas alone,” he urged.

Italy Urges Israel to Halt Gaza Strikes: 'Enough with the Attacks'

Israel has launched a new phase of its attacks, declaring it is in the “initial stages” of a wider operation aimed at ‘dismantling Hamas’. Israeli airstrikes have intensified since March 18, after Israel broke a two-month ceasefire agreement. The recent war initially began after Hamas’s assault on Israel in October 2023.

According to Gaza’s civil defence agency, Israeli airstrikes killed over 100 people on Friday and at least 10 more on Saturday. The ongoing violence, combined with a severe Israeli blockade on aid entering Gaza, has drawn increasing international condemnation.

Over two million people lived in the Gaza Strip before the war, with many now displaced and reliant on limited humanitarian support. Israel’s military has stated its aim is to take control of key areas in the territory as part of its strategy to defeat Hamas.
