Pacquiao, 46, to Return from Retirement for WBC Title Fight Against Barrios

Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has officially announced his return to the ring at the age of 46, confirming he will challenge Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title later this summer.

The Filipino great made the announcement via social media, declaring, “I’m back,” and adding, “Let’s make history!” His return follows earlier speculation that he would step back into the ring for a bout scheduled for July 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao, who last fought in August 2021 when he lost on points to Yordenis Ugas of Cuba for the WBA welterweight title, has not competed professionally since. The upcoming clash with Barrios will mark his return after nearly three years out of the sport.

Under WBC regulations, former champions are allowed to apply for a title shot when emerging from retirement, a rule Pacquiao is now utilising.

Throughout his illustrious career, Pacquiao has won 12 world titles across eight weight divisions, a feat unmatched in the sport. His professional record stands at 62 wins, 8 defeats, and 2 draws, with 39 of those victories coming by knockout.

Since stepping away from boxing, Pacquiao has focused on a political career in the Philippines, including an unsuccessful campaign for the country’s presidency.

Barrios, the current WBC welterweight champion, holds a record of 29 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, with 18 knockouts. He retained his belt in November after fighting fellow American Abel Ramos to a draw.
